Tips for cooking in the Year of the Ox:

  • Host a family night with crafts, games and food from China
  • When cooking with fresh ginger, first chop and then squeeze juices through a cheesecloth to get the flavor with pieces of ginger
  • Use a spoon to peel fresh ginger
  • Try frying rice noodles for a cool garnish

Celebrate Chinese New Year with Oodles of Noodles

Did you know January 26 is Chinese New Year? This year - 2009 - is the year of the ox. According to custom, the coming year will bring stability and growth. Patience and diligence will be rewarded.

Thai NoodlesAs I began research for this month’s thoughts, I came across a Chinese Proverb I decided to share:

A wise man adapts himself to circumstances, as water shapes itself to the vessel that contains it.

This got me thinking...how true this wisdom is in every aspect of life - from personal relationships to professional tasks. In my case, it fits the kitchen too.

I routinely try something new or adjust a recipe to fit ingredients, new flavor profiles or personal preferences. The next time you're in the kitchen cooking, relax! Try something new and have fun. Patience and diligence will be rewarded.

Keep cooking!
